Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Shi-Ting Wang At the Arrival Reception
2016/05/17

(17 May 2016, Golden Peacock Hotel)

Hon. Francis Kasaila, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation,

Honourable Ministers and MPs presented here,

  Colleagues from the Diplomatic Corps,

  Distinguished Guests,

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is my great pleasure and honor to have you all here in my arrival reception.

I arrived in Malawi at the end of March, and presented my letter of credence to H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi last month. I feel so lucky to be appointed as Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa.

Before my departure for Malawi, many friends of mine congratulated me on my new assignment. They described Malawi as a beautiful country with heart-touching scenery and warm-hearted people. When briefing the situation in Malawi, my colleagues in Chinese Foreign Ministry told me that over the past 52 years since its independence, Malawi has worked hard to seek the development path suited to its national conditions, maintained long-term stability, and made sustained economic and social progress.

Upon my arrival in Malawi, my first impression confirms what I heard before. The past few weeks, though short, are rewardingly inspiring. Natural beauty, social order, peace and stability all overwhelmed me and made me feel at home.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

It has been over eight years since China and Malawi established diplomatic ties, and our bilateral relationship has maintained fast and sound growth. As the fourth Chinese Ambassador to Malawi, I couldn’t come at a more opportune moment.

It is an opportune moment because our relations reached extraordinary height. We have enjoyed political mutual trust, and firmly supported each other on issues involving our respective core interests and major concerns. This has been enhanced through frequent exchange of high level visits. In September last year, H.E. President Mutharika attended the World Economic Forum in China, and met with H.E. Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. During the Johannesburg Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in December last year, H.E. Chinese President Xi Jinping and H.E. President Mutharika exchanged opinions on various issues. In January this year, H.E. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid official visit to Malawi, which was the first leg of his first foreign trip this year.

It is an opportune moment because our cooperation flourishes in all fields. We have shared rich fruits of cooperation, with all the assistance projects China promised upon establishment of diplomatic ties implemented and benefit delivered to the two peoples. In addition, China has offered training opportunities and scholarships to Malawian people from all walks of life. Last year alone, more than 500 Malawian people went to China for various training programs. We have also encouraged Chinese enterprises to increase their investment and pursue long-term development in Malawi. By doing so, they could create job opportunities and transfer technologies to local Malawians. While supporting Malawi’s economic and social development, we have achieved win-win outcome and brought benefit to both peoples.

It is an opportune moment because our interaction extends to all levels. On the international arena, we have been closely cooperating with each other, safeguarding the common interest of developing countries. Against the backdrop of China-Africa strategic partnership after the Johannesburg Summit, we actively avail of this momentum to explore new bilateral cooperation opportunities. We have also intensified cultural and people-to-people exchanges, forging close friendship between our two peoples.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

China-Malawi relations are booming as never before. I am keenly aware of the honor and responsibility that come with my appointment as the new Chinese Ambassador to Malawi. During my tenure of office, I will unremittingly exert my efforts to foster closer political mutual trust, promote vibrant economic cooperation, and intensify mutual understanding. I am convinced that in carrying out this lofty mission, I shall receive strong support and assistance from the Malawian government and all friends who share the same aspiration. Let’s join our hands to push China-Malawi friendly relations to a new high.

Now may I invite all of you to join me in a toast,

For the good health of H.E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika!

For the ever-lasting friendship between China and Malawi!

For the wellbeing and happiness of the peoples of our two countries!

  Cheers!
