Remarks by H.E. Ambassador Shi-Ting Wang at the 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition (Malawi)

(Golden Peacock Hotel, July 2, 2016)

Hon. Vincent Ghambi, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology

Distinguished Guests,

Dear Contestants,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

At first, I would like to extend the warm congratulations to all the winners of the competition today. To those who are not being able to win, I also want to say that you had tried your best. You don’t have to be very disappointed. There are lots of opportunities waiting for you, as long as you are associated with Chinese language. It is a big day for you today, I am proud of all of you. To all of you the participants, no matter you are a winner or filled to win, thank you for the wonderful and splendid shows. I am really touched and excited.

Up to now, the 9th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for secondary school students in Malawi has accomplished a complete success. I want to say thanks to the organizers and all those who have made a contribution, in one way or another. As you know, the Chinese Bridge is a Chinese language proficiency competition initiated by the Chinese Hanban (Confucius Center), with the purpose of encouraging more youth around the world to learn and understand the Chinese language and culture. Since 2008, the competition has been successfully held for 8 times. Around 1000 secondary school students from more than 50 countries attended the grand final in China. More than 20000 secondary school students attended the preliminary competition in their respective countries.

The contestants from Malawi proved to be outstanding in previous competitions. However for many years, they had to attend the first preliminary competition in other countries. In order to simplify the access to the competition for Malawian students, we organized the preliminary competition in Malawi last year. And two contestants from Malawi, 阿峰and阿旻 won the team champion title of Africa. This is quite commendable. It means they are the most outstanding students among all African contestants.

  Ladies and Gentlemen,

With the rapid development of China, the Chinese language has been considered more and more important internationally. Learning Chinese has become a new fashion. Malawian people have also showed great interest in learning Chinese. In order to help them master the language better, the Chinese Confucius Center has sent 11 Chinese teachers to Malawi, who are currently working in 4 different cities. With their hard work in teaching Chinese language and culture, they are greatly welcomed by the local people. Next month, the Confucius Institute is scheduled to be launched, and Malawian people will find it easier to have access to Chinese language and culture. Today, the Chinese teachers have brought their students to attend the competition. At this junction, please allow me to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all of them for their devotion and dedication.

And all I am sure that the competition will serve as a bridge of friendship and culture exchanges between China and Malawi, and make more people understand and love China. As the motto of the competition goes, “Learn Chinese, double your world.” Once you speak Chinese, you will be able to link yourself up to a population of 1.3 billion and your circle of friends will be more than doubled.

To conclude my remarks, I would like to extend my best wishes to the winners who got the opportunities to go to China for the grand final. I wish you will show your best, and win the grand prize, not only win the champion of Africa, but also win the champion of the world.

  Thank you.
